Obviously the author has not looked at the financial results for the last 12 years but only the stock price. There were about 3 to 4 years recently of less than Walmart like comp store sales. Now, the stores once again have the best assortment and overall prices in the marketplace which has brought traffic and sales back. It would be foolish to bet against Walmart if one has a long term strategy.

As a customer, what frustrates me about the self-check out lines is Walmart has reduced the amount of check out lanes with human cashiers, so we are forced to self-check or wait in longer lines. Watching a bored "self-checkout" babysitter stand behind a podium while we (the customer) do their work is irritating. If you want me to self-check, then give me a 10% discount on my purchase for doing so. I don't use the self-check lines anymore, and have started shopping elsewhere when I can. It just takes too long to get out of Walmart these days.

We shop locally, not nationwide, the exception being internet shopping. If in fact you live in Sarasota Fl. and see a ad for a item in LA, Walmart and all the other we match it stores should let you just buy the product in LA, which of course is not practical. The real issue in my mind is why is Walmart, the so called price leader now have to resort to a marketing tactic that in years past it forced on the competitors. The reason of course is that they have lost their low price stature. Bob

THE AD THAT IS ADVERTISED ON TV IS WE WILL MATCH IT! THEN WHY IS THERE STIPULATIONS ABOUT LOCAL COMPETITORS ONLY. IS IT NOT TRUE THAT WALMART IS ABOUT THE LOWEST PRICES ON THE MARKET? THE MARKET IS NATION WIDE!

Smaller stores in urban & rural areas will be wonderful, especially in Louisiana. Many of the smaller towns that had a small Wal-Mart stores did close and force individuals (less fortunate) to venture into the supercenters. I hope the change for the future will help the less fortunate.

These loopholes that Walmart has found in the California law is just another sleazy way for Walmart to throw it's weight and money around. It's not surprising to me as Walmart is a big supporter of GOP policies and candidates, who also tend to find ways of circumventing democracy to get their own way. That has been seen in so many different ways over the past several years in particular, with the Senate GOP abusing the filibuster rules to prevent any progress being made in the country's economic recovery. At the state level it has been seen with GOP Governors and state assemblies passing voter suppression laws, denying worker rights, and even taking over entire towns and tossing out democratically elected officials. The way to deal with these tyrannical practices is to vote out those GOP representatives and boycotting Walmart might make them start thinking twice before forcing towns to permit them to expand despite the damaging effects to local neighbors.

Walmart International is covering up a lot of the problems at Walmart and when the US$ gains back muscle versus other currencies, issues will be more apparent. In the last 5 years, there have been drastic changes in the fundamental culture that built Walmart, here are two changes witnessed by many suppliers:

Merchants (buyers) have lost power within the organization to logistics/replenishment. Merchants are no longer making decisions that will ultimately drive sales in their department, they are making decisions based on stock levels. This is a slippery slope, insufficient stock at store = lower sales.

If Walmart employees (home office) continue to be arrogant with their partners (suppliers) they will rightfully fail. Partners bring the ideas and creativity that drive category sales. Bill Simon says that they want to work with suppliers, so far that has not been witnessed in the supplier community. Actions speak louder than words Bill.

The bigger they are, the harder the fall.
