Target plans launch of CityTarget shops to rival Walmart Express – SmartPlanet.com

SmartPlanet.com reports that Target plans to expand its CityTarget chain of small-format stores in urban areas.

The article also reports that instead of constructing new stores, Target hopes to take over unused retail spaces, an environmentally conscious move.

Still, reporter Tyler Falk wonders what the big box invasion of urban areas will mean for downtown aesthetics:

“For now the downtown market for traditional big box store is fairly untapped. But with big names looking to the city, will downtowns look more like (walkable) suburban strip malls?”
